My planer has its own blower on it, and even with the dust collector in use, it blows sawdust through the small opening behind the blast gate. That little pile always drove me nuts. So I squeezed a thin bead of caulk over the slit behind the gate. Problem solved. But then I cast an eye on all those blast gate slits, which all bled off valuable suction, and caulked them, too. Sealing the slits won’t make a huge difference, but it only takes a few minutes, and the tighter your system is, the better the suction. Just don’t fill the slit too deep or you’ll glue the gate shut. — Travis Larson
